The built-in single-pole single-throw switch is electrically separate from the control pot. You might use this switch to coil-cut a humbucker, or use it as a dedicated on/off switch for a pickup.
 
Split shaft versions are designed for press-fit knobs. Solid shafts are for set-screw knobs. The long shaft fits carved-top solidbodies and other guitars with thicker tops.
